Most banks can flag an account as dormant after just 4 to 10 years of zero customer-initiated activity. But here’s the part that surprises most people: automatic interest credited to your account does not necessarily count as activity. So the bank could be adding a few cents to your balance every month, yet the account may still be considered inactive because the activity needs to come from you the account holder such as logging in, making a deposit, withdrawing money, or otherwise interacting with the account.

If enough time passes without qualifying activity, the account can eventually become subject to escheatment, a legal process through which abandoned funds are transferred to the state's unclaimed-property program. Before that happens, banks are generally required to make efforts to contact the account holder. They may send a letter to the address on file or attempt to reach the customer using the contact information associated with the account.

If those attempts are unsuccessful and the account continues to meet the applicable definition of abandoned property, the balance can ultimately be turned over to the state. At that point, the money isn't necessarily gone forever it becomes part of the state's unclaimed-property system, where the rightful owner may be able to claim it.

And the scale of this is enormous. State treasuries are estimated to be holding around $70 billion in unclaimed money, including dormant savings accounts, uncashed paychecks, forgotten security deposits, and old investment holdings. Roughly 1 in 7 Americans may have money somewhere in that massive pool without realizing it, while California alone holds more than $15 billion in unclaimed property.

What makes it especially easy to overlook is that the money may belong to someone who is still alive, working, and completely unaware that an old account or financial asset has been classified as abandoned. A balance can sit untouched for years while the owner simply assumes the money is still exactly where they left it.
